Max Weinberg has a confident and powerful style that comes through in this song’s attitude. One of my favorite things about the entire Darkness on the Edge of Town album is the feeling that every single note counts- there’s no fluff to the playing. Weinberg starts with a spacious foundation for a groove that he gradually develops into the verse and chorus. His use of flams in the song’s transitions sharpens and defines the song’s attitude. But like any great songwriter’s drummer, the thing that always stands out best about Weinberg is that his drumming gives Bruce Springsteen the perfect fuel for his fire. The drums always fit the song and ride hard with the melody. That’s why I find Max Weinberg’s style worth emulating.
